Telangana To Set Up 79 New Dialysis Centres As NIMS Crosses 2,000 Kidney Transplants
The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has achieved a major milestone by successfully completing 2,000 kidney transplant surgeries , marking a significant achievement in Telangana’s public healthcare system.
To commemorate the occasion, Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha felicitated the doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff during a special programme held at NIMS on Saturday.
Speaking at the event, the Minister praised the dedication and sustained efforts of the medical teams, stating that the accomplishment reflects the growing strength of government healthcare institutions in the state. He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy , government hospitals in Telangana are increasingly delivering advanced medical care on par with leading corporate hospitals.
Damodar Rajanarsimha noted that kidney transplantation was once considered an expensive treatment accessible only to the wealthy. However, he said the state government is now ensuring free organ transplant services for poor patients through the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme.
According to the Minister, the government is not only covering the cost of surgeries but is also supplying lifelong post-transplant medicines to patients free of cost, reducing the financial burden on families.
Highlighting the government’s broader healthcare strategy, he said Telangana is building a comprehensive “kidney care ecosystem” that covers everything from dialysis services to organ transplantation.
The Minister revealed that more than 100 dialysis centres are currently functioning across the state and announced that the government is establishing 79 additional dialysis centres to expand access to treatment.
He further stated that organ transplant services are being strengthened at Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital alongside NIMS. As part of these efforts, the state recently launched a State Organ Transplant Centre at Gandhi Hospital.
In another major initiative, the government is developing the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) at Sanathnagar into a dedicated Centre of Excellence for organ transplantation , he added.
