Telangana to revamp education policy

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced major reforms in the state’s education policy. He said the government will redesign the education system to match international standards and ensure quality education and better job opportunities for students.

In a recent review meeting with senior education officials, the CM expressed concern that the current system does not meet global needs. He pointed out that while around 1.1 lakh engineering students graduate every year in Telangana, only about 15% of them secure jobs. He blamed the shortcomings in the education system for this gap.

Education as a tool to fight poverty The Chief Minister said education is the only real way to fight poverty. By reforming the system, the government can secure a brighter future for 73 lakh young people in the state. He noted the imbalance between private and government schools - while 34 lakh students study in 11,000 private schools, only 18 lakh are enrolled in 27,000 government schools. He stressed the need to strengthen public schools and reduce this gap. Telangana’s new education policy, he said, should serve as a model for the entire country, covering reforms from Class 1 to Class 12.

Funding challenges The CM also highlighted the funding issues in the education sector. Of the Rs 21,000 crore allocated to the department, 98% is spent on salaries, leaving very little for development. He said he had requested Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to exempt education loans from the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) limits, so that more funds could be used for education reforms.

Expert committee To drive these reforms, the government will set up an expert committee. The panel will study modern education models, curriculum changes, teacher training, and the use of technology in schools. The CM emphasized that engineering graduates need not just theoretical knowledge, but also industry-oriented skills. The reforms aim to ensure that students are job-ready by the time they finish school or college, thereby reducing unemployment in the state.
