Telangana to Develop World-Class Golf Courses at Jawahar Nagar and Somasila

The Telangana government is moving to position the state as a world-class golf tourism destination, with plans to develop international-standard golf courses at Jawahar Nagar near Shamirpet and Somasila on the banks of the Krishna River, Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the closing events of the 12th Telangana Golconda Masters, the minister said the proposed Jawahar Nagar golf course would be developed across 130 acres. Another international-standard course is being planned at Somasila as part of a broader effort to expand sports-based tourism in the state.

Jupally said the Somasila project would bring together golf, nature and tourism, taking advantage of the region’s scenic surroundings. Located along the Krishna River and close to the Nallamala forest region and the Amrabad Tiger Reserve, Somasila has the potential to emerge as a distinctive tourism destination, he said.

The government plans to develop golf tourism infrastructure through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with an emphasis on creating facilities that meet international standards.

The 12th Telangana Golconda Masters, organised jointly by the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA) and the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), will be held from September 1 to 4. The Telangana Tourism Department is a partner in the tournament.

A total of 132 Indian and international golfers will compete for a prize purse of Rs 1 crore. The tournament will also offer Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, adding to its significance on the professional golfing calendar.

The minister said the government also plans to utilise the services of Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev to promote Telangana’s tourism and sports sectors at the national and international levels.

Kapil Dev appreciated the continued support extended by the Telangana Tourism Department, saying events such as the Golconda Masters would help strengthen Hyderabad and Telangana’s identity as emerging golf tourism destinations.

Jaswinder Singh Birgi, Captain of the Hyderabad Golf Association, said hosting the tournament against the backdrop of the historic Golconda Fort would provide a global platform to showcase Telangana’s tourism potential and cultural heritage.

Amandeep Johl, CEO of the DP World PGTI, Czech Republic golfer Stepan Danek, and others were present. The Telangana government has extended continuous support to the tournament since its launch in 2015.
