Amid ongoing discussions over the Intermediate education system in Telangana, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to conduct Intermediate admissions for the 2026–27 academic year as usual in the state. Citing limited time for admissions and several technical challenges involved in merging Intermediate education with the school education system, the Chief Minister stressed that the admission process should begin immediately in the interest of students.

In its report submitted to the state government, the Telangana Education Commission recommended scrapping the existing standalone Intermediate system and introducing the Class 11 and 12 model followed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) . The Commission observed that such a change could significantly reduce student dropout rates.

While most states in the country follow the Class 11 and 12 system within school education, Telangana continues to maintain a separate Intermediate structure. The government noted that many students completing Class 10 in government schools discontinue their studies instead of joining separate junior colleges. In this context, the Chief Minister had earlier instructed officials to examine the possibility of integrating Intermediate education into the school education system rather than continuing it as a separate stage. The Telangana Education Commission also expressed a similar view in its report.

Following recent announcements by officials that Intermediate admissions would be put on hold, students and parents expressed serious concern. In response, the Chief Minister held a review meeting with MP Vem Narender Reddy , Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao , and other senior officials. During the meeting, the CM noted that several technical issues were linked to the merger process and required detailed examination.

The Chief Minister directed officials to hold extensive consultations with stakeholders regarding the proposed merger process. He also instructed the Education Policy Committee to study the issue and submit a comprehensive report. Revanth Reddy clarified that a final decision would be taken only after discussions in the Legislative Assembly on the committee’s report.

For now, he instructed officials to immediately commence the Intermediate admissions process to ensure that students do not lose an academic year.
