Telangana Targets Poverty-Free State by 2030, Developed Economy by 2033

The Telangana government has set an ambitious target of making the state poverty-free by 2030 and building the country’s first developed economy by 2033. As part of its long-term economic and social development strategy, the government plans to strengthen planning, implementation and monitoring mechanisms to accelerate progress towards these goals.

A high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Thursday reviewed measures to reinforce the state’s development framework. Finance and Planning department officials, senior bureaucrats and representatives of the Hyderabad-based Global Forum for Sustainable Transformation (GFST) participated in the meeting. S.P. Tucker, former Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and Vice-Chairman of GFST, was also present.

The discussions focused on improving coordination between government departments, strengthening development planning and creating mechanisms to track outcomes on a continuous basis. The government decided to further strengthen the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) and establish a dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU).

The PMU will oversee strategic planning for priority programmes, coordinate between departments, monitor implementation and help speed up key development initiatives. The government also plans targeted interventions to achieve the 2030 poverty-free goal by identifying vulnerable families, linking them with welfare schemes and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

A separate monitoring mechanism will be developed to measure the impact of poverty alleviation programmes and track progress against defined targets.

For the 2033 developed-economy objective, the state intends to formulate a focused growth strategy that makes better use of its economic and human resources. The roadmap will emphasise investment, innovation, employment generation and inclusive growth.

The government also plans to bring in sector-specific experts and consultants to strengthen institutional capacity. A proposal for an MoU between the Telangana government and GFST will cover strategic planning, data-based decision-making, technology, knowledge support, capacity building and programme monitoring.

Officials have also been directed to prepare district-level development plans linked to measurable targets, key performance indicators, budget allocations and data-driven dashboards.

In addition, seven Sectoral Growth Labs will be established covering poverty alleviation, infrastructure and logistics, healthcare, tourism, livestock and aquaculture, urbanisation, and the developed-economy agenda. The labs will bring government departments, industry, experts and educational institutions together to identify opportunities and resolve implementation bottlenecks.

Finance Principal Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Economic and Planning Department Secretary Gaurav Uppal and other senior officials attended the meeting.
