Telangana Targets One Lakh Urban Homes Under Indiramma Scheme

In a major push to expand affordable housing within Hyderabad, the Telangana Government has launched the application process for the Indiramma Low-Income Group (LIG) Housing Scheme under the Core Urban Region (CURE) initiative. The programme seeks to provide permanent housing to economically weaker families living in the city by developing residential complexes closer to their existing neighbourhoods, addressing one of the biggest shortcomings of previous urban housing projects.

Launching the initiative at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat, Revenue, Housing and Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, along with Ministers Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar, and Mohammed Azharuddin, announced that the government has begun the first phase with 8,000 houses across 16 Assembly constituencies, with 500 units earmarked for each constituency. The scheme will soon be expanded to another eight constituencies as part of the government's larger target of constructing one lakh urban houses under the CURE project.

The Minister said the Congress government has already initiated 4.5 lakh Indiramma houses in the first phase and 2.5 lakh houses in the second phase across Telangana. The latest initiative extends the flagship housing programme to urban areas, with the government aiming to complete the first batch of homes before Bonalu 2027, enabling beneficiaries to celebrate the festival from their new residences.

Unlike earlier housing projects that were built 30-35 kilometres away from Hyderabad, the new apartments will come up on government-owned land within or near existing residential localities, allowing beneficiaries to remain close to their workplaces, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and public transport. Officials believe this approach will significantly improve occupancy and the long-term success of the scheme.

Applications will be accepted from July 21 to August 10 through MeeSeva centres, the official portal and WhatsApp (8096958096). During the launch, the government also unveiled the scheme brochure and honoured Konda Nagaraju of Nakrekal, Nalgonda district, with a ₹1 lakh cash award for spreading awareness about the programme through social media.

Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive 525-square-foot apartments comprising one bedroom, a hall and a kitchen. Each unit is estimated to cost ₹11 lakh, with the government providing a ₹5 lakh subsidy, while beneficiaries will pay the remaining ₹6 lakh in four instalments. The land, valued between ₹40 lakh and ₹60 lakh, will be registered free of cost in the name of a woman in the beneficiary's family. While the houses cannot be sold for 10 years, owners will be allowed to mortgage them for bank loans. Reservation norms for SC, ST and BC communities will be followed during allotment.

To qualify, applicants must have an annual family income below ₹6 lakh, should not own a house or residential plot within the CURE limits, and only one application per family will be accepted. Applications will undergo a 360-degree verification process, and if the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available houses, beneficiaries will be selected through a transparent public lottery. The government has also assured that the ₹10,000 application deposit will be fully refunded to applicants who are not allotted a house.

The first phase will cover Mylardevpally, Jalpally, Raidurgam, Tatti Annaram-Bandlaguda, Koukour, Red Hills, Hakimpet Dargah, Jubilee Hills (MLA Colony), Kulsumpura, Nandimusaliguda, City Police Lines (Amberpet), KPHB Colony, Pocharam LIG Colony, Gajularamaram, Patigadda, Maredpally-Mahendrahills, and Gaddiannaram R&B Quarters. Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy also hinted that the government would soon unveil a housing scheme for middle-income families, broadening Telangana's affordable housing initiatives.
