Telangana Seeks 11.56 Lakh PMAY-G Houses in Single Phase

Telangana has urged the Centre to allocate 11,56,915 houses in a single phase under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) 2.0, citing a large backlog of housing needs among rural poor families.

State Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy made the request during a meeting with Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi on Wednesday. He submitted a memorandum seeking an early allocation and referred to an earlier letter from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on the issue.

Ponguleti said Telangana had completed a comprehensive door-to-door survey of rural households through the Awaas Plus-2024 app to identify families eligible for housing assistance. More than 11.56 lakh families were found eligible, while the processes of removing ineligible applicants and conducting the required super-check verification had also been completed.

Despite completing the verification exercise, the state is still waiting for the Centre to announce its housing targets, the minister said. He pointed to the long-standing gap in rural housing and argued that Telangana's pending demand should be addressed through a single allocation instead of being spread across multiple phases.

Ponguleti also highlighted the Telangana government's decision to provide ₹5 lakh to each eligible family to construct a permanent house. The assistance will be provided separately from the funds available under PMAY-G, including the Centre's contribution and the state's share, he said.

During the meeting, Ponguleti invited Shivraj Singh Chouhan to visit Telangana and assess the housing situation on the ground. He said a visit by the Union minister followed by an announcement on the PMAY-G 2.0 allocation would provide significant reassurance to rural families awaiting houses.

Chouhan responded positively to the invitation and agreed to visit Telangana.

The Centre's decision on the state's request will now be closely watched, as the proposed allocation could enable Telangana to take up housing construction for more than 11.5 lakh rural families identified through the survey.
