Telangana Plans Global-Standard Upgrade for Hyderabad’s Historic Sites

In a decisive move to elevate Hyderabad’s global appeal, the Telangana government has rolled out an ambitious plan to breathe new life into the city’s historic landmarks , blending preservation with modern tourism infrastructure.

Taking stock of the initiative on the ground, Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao , accompanied by Tourism Development Corporation MD Gauthami , toured key heritage sites in the Old City. Their visit focused on reviewing the pace and quality of restoration works at some of Hyderabad’s most recognized monuments.

At the heart of the plan lies a dual strategy protecting centuries-old heritage while enhancing visitor experience through contemporary facilities . During inspections at Charminar and Chowmahalla Palace , the minister stressed that development must not compromise the historical character of these landmarks. Instead, authorities have been asked to ensure that modernization complements the city’s architectural legacy.

A significant portion of the effort is directed at reviving historic gateways. The government has approved ₹3.64 crore for the restoration of Machli Kaman , while parallel proposals are being prepared for the modernization of Sher-e-Batil Kaman . These projects are expected to strengthen the cultural landscape of the Old City and create a more cohesive heritage corridor.

In addition, the surroundings of Charminar are set for a comprehensive makeover, with plans to upgrade the area to international standards . Improved infrastructure, better public amenities, and aesthetic enhancements are expected to make the precinct more accessible and appealing to both domestic and international tourists.

The initiative will be driven under the state’s new tourism policy , with a strong focus on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to accelerate infrastructure development. Officials believe this approach will bring in efficiency, investment, and innovation to the heritage sector.

Beyond tourism, the government sees the project as an economic catalyst. The revival efforts are expected to generate employment opportunities for local youth while significantly boosting the state’s tourism revenue .
