Telangana Panchayat elections conclude with over 85% voter turnout in final phase

The three-phase Telangana Gram Panchayat elections concluded on Wednesday with a strong voter turnout exceeding 85 percent in the final phase, reflecting high public participation in grassroots democracy. According to the State Election Commission, 85.77 percent of eligible voters exercised their franchise during the third and final phase of polling, marking one of the highest participation rates recorded in recent local body elections in the state.

The elections were conducted in three phases on December 11, 14 and 17 across thousands of gram panchayats in Telangana. Polling in the final phase covered around 4,159 sarpanch posts along with ward member positions. Election officials stated that the polling process was peaceful and incident-free, with extensive security arrangements and webcasting at sensitive polling stations to ensure transparency.

Voter turnout remained consistently high across all three phases. The first phase recorded 84.28 percent polling, followed by 85.86 percent in the second phase, while the final phase again crossed the 85 percent mark. More than 43 lakh voters participated in the final round alone, underlining the strong interest of rural voters in local governance.

Congress-backed candidates emerged as the dominant force in the sarpanch elections held during the first two phases. In the first phase held on December 11, Congress-supported candidates won approximately 2,319 sarpanch posts. The party continued its strong performance in the second phase on December 14, securing around 2,297 sarpanch posts, including a significant number of uncontested victories.

Overall, Congress-backed candidates bagged roughly 4,616 sarpanch positions in the first two phases, giving the party a clear lead over its rivals at the grassroots level. Although the elections were officially conducted without party symbols, political affiliations played a visible role in determining outcomes in many villages.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) emerged as the second-largest force in the village-level contests. BRS-supported candidates won around 1,160 to 1,170 sarpanch seats in the first phase and 1,191 seats in the second phase, taking the party’s total to approximately 2,350 sarpanch posts across the first two phases.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trailed behind both Congress and BRS in the first two rounds. BJP-backed candidates secured about 188 to 189 sarpanch seats in the first phase and 257 seats in the second phase, resulting in a combined tally of around 445 to 446 sarpanch posts. Independent candidates and representatives of smaller parties also won a sizeable number of seats, reflecting the localised nature of panchayat politics.

Polling for the third and final phase concluded on December 17, covering over 4,150 sarpanch posts. While the final consolidated results are still awaited, early trends indicate that Congress-backed candidates continue to enjoy an advantage in several districts. Nearly 400 sarpanch posts in the final phase were reportedly won unopposed, pointing to local consensus in many villages.

The gram panchayat elections are being viewed as an important indicator of rural political sentiment in Telangana, particularly in the backdrop of recent Assembly and by-election results. With counting underway for the final phase, the State Election Commission is expected to announce the complete results shortly, formally bringing the local body election process to a close.
