Telangana Notifies Reservations for 121 Municipalities, 10 Municipal Corporations
Telangana government has issued a formal notification finalising the reservation of wards and top civic leadership posts (Chairpersons/Mayors) ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. The notification, released by the Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department through G.O.Ms.No.14 dated January 13, 2026 , lays out the reservation framework for 121 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations across the state, paving the way for the election process to move forward.
According to the updated municipal data, Telangana’s municipal landscape includes 123 municipalities , comprising a total of 2,996 wards , with an electorate of 52,43,023 voters . These figures highlight the scale of the civic exercise, with the reservation mapping expected to influence candidate selection and leadership eligibility across thousands of wards in urban local bodies. The reservations notified cover both ward-level seats and the offices of Chairpersons/Mayors .
As per the notification, reservations have been finalised for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Backward Classes (BCs), Women , along with Unreserved categories . Officials said the reservation exercise was carried out based on recommendations of the Dedicated Commission , along with inputs from the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA), Hyderabad , and has been structured in line with provisions of the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019 .
The government order specifies that category-wise reservation details will be attached through annexures that include ward-wise reservation lists for municipalities and corporations, and also the reservation distribution for leadership positions such as Chairpersons in municipalities and Mayors in municipal corporations . The notification also reinforces mandatory women reservation across categories , ensuring representation in all groups including SC, ST, BC and General segments.
In the case of Telangana’s 10 municipal corporations , the government has notified ward-wise reservation based on specific criteria. The allotment is guided by ST and SC population as per the 2011 Census , BC reservation as recommended by the Dedicated Commission , along with Women (General) reservations and the distribution of Unreserved (UR) seats. Overall, the reservation notification for municipal corporations covers 760 wards across the state.
With the reservation exercise now formally notified, focus has shifted to the State Election Commission (SEC) , which is expected to announce the election schedule soon. The notification is considered a key step because reservation mapping determines who can contest from which wards and who is eligible for urban leadership positions , making it central to the political build-up and contest strategies ahead of Telangana’s civic elections.
