Telangana Media Delegation Explores Critical Minerals at CSIR-IMMT
A media delegation from Telangana, organised under the Press Information Bureau (PIB) , visited the CSIR-IMMT in Bhubaneswar as part of an exposure tour aimed at strengthening science and development reporting . The initiative seeks to give journalists direct insight into national scientific institutions of strategic importance.
During interactions with scientists, the delegation explored research in mineral processing , extractive metallurgy , materials engineering , and sustainable technologies . Established in 1964, the institute has published over 925 research papers , secured patents, and completed multiple technology transfers. Its innovations in iron ore beneficiation , pelletization , chromite processing , and graphite purification are already in commercial use across India.
A major highlight was work on critical and strategic minerals such as lithium , platinum group elements (PGEs) , nickel , cobalt , rare earth elements (REEs) , and tellurium . Ongoing projects include lithium extraction from Indian deposits , PGE recovery , and REE extraction from industrial residues, supporting India’s clean energy transition , battery manufacturing , and strategic mineral security .
Scientists also showcased waste-to-wealth technologies that recover metals from industrial waste , mine tailings, red mud, fly ash, and used batteries. Research is advancing green steel , hydrogen-based DRI , and environmentally responsible industrial processes. The institute maintains international collaborations , including with Australia, to strengthen critical mineral research.
Officials clarified that the delegation consisted of journalists, not policymakers, and that the visit aimed to enhance understanding of scientific infrastructure driving Atmanirbhar Bharat and economic growth.
Later, the group visited Kala Bhoomi – Odisha Crafts Museum , exploring Odisha’s traditional handicrafts and cultural heritage.
