Telangana Human Rights Commission seeks report on suspected custodial death of dalit youth

The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken serious note of the alleged custodial death of a Dalit youth in Suryapet district and has directed the state Home Department to submit a detailed report on the incident.

The Commission acted on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, who accused the police of illegal detention and custodial violence. After examining her petition, the Commission issued formal orders seeking an explanation from the authorities, according to an official statement released on Monday.

According to the complaint, the youth was allegedly picked up by Chilkur and Kodad Rural Police and kept in illegal custody from November 4 to November 9. His mother alleged that police subjected him to severe physical torture using third-degree methods and did not allow family members to meet him during this period.

She further claimed that the police later registered a false criminal case against her son and remanded him to judicial custody on November 10. On the same day, officials from the Huzurnagar sub-jail reportedly informed the family that his health had deteriorated. When she saw him in jail, she found him in critical condition.

As his condition worsened, the youth was shifted to the Suryapet District Government Hospital on November 14 and later referred to a government hospital in Hyderabad for advanced treatment. Despite medical care, he died on November 16. His mother alleged that custodial torture by the police was the direct cause of his death.

Considering the seriousness of the human rights violation allegations, the Human Rights Commission decided to club this case with another related complaint already under consideration. It directed the State Chief Secretary to submit a comprehensive report detailing the incident and the actions taken so far.

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for January 12, 2026.

Meanwhile, State Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivdhar Reddy has stated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing and assured that strict action would be taken against those found responsible, based on the findings of the inquiry.
