Telangana Government to Review RTC–Metro Common Pass Fares
The Telangana government is preparing to reconsider the fares of the RTC–Metro common travel pass following complaints from commuters that the current prices are too high. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the government would hold discussions with senior officials to review the fare structure, following directions from Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka. The proposed review aims to address public concerns and explore ways to make the integrated transport facility more affordable for daily passengers.
The common pass was introduced to enable commuters to use both Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses and Metro Rail services through a single pass. However, the existing pricing has triggered concerns among passengers, particularly those from lower-income and middle-class families who rely on public transport for their daily commute.
At present, the daily common pass costs ₹400, with ₹300 allocated to Metro services and ₹100 to RTC buses. The monthly pass is priced at ₹8,500, comprising ₹7,000 for Metro travel and ₹1,500 for RTC services. Commuters have expressed concerns that these rates could make the facility expensive for regular users, undermining the affordability that public transport is expected to offer.
The government has now decided to examine the existing rates in response to these concerns. According to the minister, a meeting with senior officials will be convened shortly to assess the fare structure and discuss possible changes. The review will consider passenger feedback and the practical aspects of implementing the common pass system.
Ponnam Prabhakar said the government would take public opinion and ground-level realities into account before arriving at a decision on the revised fares. The objective is to strengthen the public transport network while encouraging more commuters to use buses and Metro Rail for their everyday journeys.
The minister also emphasised that the common pass system should be designed around passengers’ needs and provide tangible financial benefits. Making integrated travel accessible to a wider section of society remains an important consideration in the review.
The government intends to ensure that the fare structure does not impose an unnecessary financial burden on commuters. No revised fares have been announced so far, and the existing prices remain in place pending consultations and a final decision by the authorities.
