Telangana Frees 91 Life Convicts Under Special Remission on State Formation Day
In a significant gesture marking Telangana State Formation Day , the state government has released 91 life convicts from prisons across the state under a special remission programme, highlighting its growing emphasis on rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The release was carried out by the Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services Department following the government's approval of special remission orders for eligible inmates. The beneficiaries include 85 male prisoners and six women inmates , all of whom were found to have met the criteria prescribed under the remission policy.
Officials described the initiative as more than a symbolic act tied to the state's foundation celebrations. They said the programme reflects a broader commitment to helping reformed prisoners transition back into society and rebuild their lives with dignity.
Recognising that employment plays a crucial role in preventing repeat offences and ensuring a smooth return to normal life, the department has taken steps to provide immediate livelihood opportunities to several of the released inmates. Of the 91 prisoners freed, 38 have been offered jobs at fuel outlets operated by the prison department , enabling them to secure a stable source of income soon after their release.
The remaining 53 former inmates have expressed a preference for pursuing independent livelihoods through agriculture, self-employment ventures, family-run businesses and other lawful occupations. Prison authorities said these individuals would continue to receive guidance and support as they work towards becoming self-reliant members of society.
Special attention has also been given to the rehabilitation of women prisoners. Under a self-employment support initiative funded through the Jail Development Fund , four women inmates were provided sewing machines to help them generate income and establish sustainable livelihoods after leaving prison.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Soumya Mishra , Director General of the Telangana Prisons Department, said the programme represents the beginning of a new chapter for the released inmates rather than merely the end of their prison terms. She stressed that the primary objective of modern correctional institutions is not only to punish offenders but also to encourage positive transformation and personal reform .
According to her, rehabilitation does not end when an inmate walks out of prison. Continued support after release is equally important in helping former prisoners reintegrate into society and lead productive lives. She urged the released convicts to make the most of the opportunity offered to them and become examples of successful reform within their communities.
Dr. Mishra also thanked Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for their continued support towards prisoner welfare and correctional reforms.
