As Telangana prepares for the Kharif 2026 season, the state government has moved to calm farmer concerns over input availability while sharpening its focus on quality enforcement and regulatory vigilance . Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Thursday announced that seed stocks are not only sufficient but nearly double the projected requirement , positioning the state for a smooth sowing season.

According to official estimates, cultivation is expected across 134.66 lakh acres , requiring about 19.42 lakh quintals of seeds . However, the state currently holds 38.21 lakh quintals , creating a comfortable buffer. Cotton, which continues to dominate Kharif acreage due to its commercial returns, remains a key focus area. For a targeted 52 lakh acres of cotton cultivation , authorities have readied over 212 lakh seed packets , far exceeding the estimated demand of 104 lakh packets. Officials have been instructed to complete distribution well before mid-May to avoid delays during the critical sowing window.

Beyond availability, the government’s sharper message this season is on seed integrity . Citing recurring incidents of crop losses linked to spurious inputs in previous years, the minister reiterated a “zero tolerance” stance on fake and substandard seeds . Enforcement measures are being scaled up through coordinated action with law enforcement agencies, including border surveillance, transport checks, and dedicated task force teams to intercept illegal consignments.

The state’s approach aligns with a broader national shift toward tightened seed regulation and traceability systems . Emerging frameworks such as QR-coded packaging and digital tracking platforms like SATHI (Seed Authentication, Traceability & Holistic Inventory) are expected to enhance transparency across the supply chain. Simultaneously, proposed legislative reforms are pushing for stricter penalties on fraudulent suppliers , reflecting growing concern over farmer vulnerability to poor-quality inputs.

At the administrative level, Telangana has introduced stricter accountability norms for seed companies. Firms are now required to submit monthly stock disclosures , and any distribution of substandard seeds even under self-certification will invite direct liability for farmer losses . The government is also strengthening seed testing laboratories to ensure rigorous quality checks before seeds reach the market.

While hybrid seeds remain central to productivity gains, the state is also encouraging a parallel push toward green manure crops , aiming to restore soil health and sustain long-term agricultural output. This dual strategy reflects a broader policy shift balancing immediate yield improvements with ecological sustainability .

With adequate stocks, tighter enforcement, and improved monitoring systems in place, Telangana is entering the Kharif season with a clear objective: to ensure that farmers are supported not just with enough inputs , but with reliable, high-quality ones a critical factor in stabilizing incomes and reducing agrarian risk.
