Telangana Assembly Suspends 22 BRS MLAs Over Disruptions During Monsoon Session

The Telangana Assembly witnessed a major confrontation on Wednesday as 22 BRS MLAs were suspended for disrupting proceedings during the ongoing monsoon session. The lawmakers were suspended until the end of the day’s sitting after they raised slogans, displayed placards and entered the Well of the House. Legislative Affairs Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu moved the suspension motion, which was approved by Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.

The disruption began soon after the House assembled in the morning, with BRS members holding placards demanding justice and raising slogans. BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) had submitted an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the alleged treatment of BRS women MLAs by police near the Assembly gates two days earlier. He also sought a debate over alleged remarks by some ruling Congress members expressing a wish for the death of BRS chief and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR).

As protests continued, Speaker Prasad Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Sridhar Babu repeatedly appealed to the BRS legislators to return to their seats. The Speaker said their demands could be considered if submitted in writing. Bhatti Vikramarka said the Congress leadership wanted KCR to remain in good health and continue serving the people for many years, while urging BRS members to express their views from their seats without resorting to aggressive behaviour.

The Deputy Chief Minister also referred to an incident at KCR’s Erravelli farmhouse on September 8, where Congress and Dalit activists staged a protest over alleged inappropriate remarks made by BRS MLC Tata Madhusudhan against the Speaker. He criticised reports that BRS leaders had sprinkled turmeric water at the location as a form of “purification” after the protest, questioning how long Dalits would continue to face such alleged humiliation. He said the issue concerned self-respect and that insults directed at the Speaker would not be tolerated.

The 22 suspended BRS MLAs include KTR, T. Harish Rao, Gangula Kamalakar, G. Jagadish Reddy, P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, V. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy, Kaushik Reddy, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, Kova Laxmi, K. Manik Rao, Chinta Prabhakar, Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, Marri Rajasekhar Reddy, Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, T. Srinivas Yadav, D. Sudheer Reddy, Kaleru Venkatesh and others. The Telangana Assembly has 119 members, with BRS holding 37 seats.
