Telangana Assembly Session Begins Today Amid Congress-BRS Political Face-Off

The Telangana Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session is set to begin today, with the ruling Congress and opposition BRS preparing for a politically charged confrontation over governance, unfulfilled promises and a range of public issues. The BJP, meanwhile, is expected to use the session to target the government on matters it has been raising outside the House.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has maintained that his government is prepared to discuss every issue on the floor of the House. He has repeatedly criticised BRS chief and former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) for remaining away from the Assembly and public engagements since the BRS lost power in December 2023.

Revanth Reddy has challenged KCR to participate in an open debate comparing the Congress government’s 1,000-day tenure with the BRS’s decade in power. The Congress has also launched protests demanding KCR’s resignation as Leader of the Opposition, accusing him of drawing public resources without regularly attending the Assembly. The Chief Minister has claimed that around Rs 1.24 crore was spent on KCR’s salary over the past 1,000 days, while another Rs 21 crore was spent on his security, bullet-proof vehicles and other facilities.

The BRS is preparing to counter the Congress offensive with its own chargesheet against the government. BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) has accused the Congress administration of failing to deliver on several major election commitments. He is expected to raise issues concerning farmers, students, unemployed youth, women and government employees, along with pending fee reimbursement and promises such as the Rs 5 lakh ‘Bharosa’ card and scooters for female students.

The BJP is also preparing to corner the government, particularly over the large-scale inclusion of lands in prohibited lists under Section 22A of the Registration Act, alleged failures to fulfil electoral promises and concerns over the state’s law-and-order situation. The party is also likely to raise allegations that central funds are being diverted by the state government.

Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy has indicated that the government will introduce a resolution seeking to reduce the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections from 25 to 21 years. With the Congress, BRS and BJP entering the session with sharply contrasting agendas, the proceedings are expected to witness intense political exchanges.
