Telangana Adds Third DISCOM, Focuses on Agricultural Power Management

The Telangana government has announced the creation of Telangana Rythu Power Distribution Company Limited (TGRPDCL) , a new electricity distribution company dedicated to the agricultural sector. The initiative is aimed at improving the management of power supplied to farmers and key water supply systems across the state.

The Energy Department issued official orders on March 11, 2026 , formally approving the establishment of the new company. Until now, electricity distribution in the state was handled by two utilities Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) and Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) . With the formation of TGRPDCL , Telangana will now operate three DISCOMs , with the latest entity focusing primarily on agricultural power supply .

According to the government order, the registered office of the new company will function from B Block of the TGSPDCL corporate office complex in Hyderabad. The organisation has been designed to create a dedicated administrative and operational system for monitoring and managing electricity used in the farming sector.

Under the new structure, all agricultural electricity connections across Telangana will be brought under the jurisdiction of TGRPDCL . In addition, electricity supply for lift irrigation projects , Mission Bhagiratha drinking water systems , and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will also be managed by the new company. Municipal water supply connections under the LT VI-B category will similarly fall within its operational scope.

Officials say the decision is intended to improve efficiency in power distribution , strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure better electricity services for farmers . By separating agricultural electricity supply from other sectors, the government expects existing utilities to focus more effectively on domestic, commercial and industrial consumers , while the new DISCOM concentrates on the needs of the farming community.

The government has appointed IAS officer Musharraf Faruqui as the Chairman and Managing Director of the newly formed company. Faruqui previously served as the CMD of TGSPDCL and brings extensive experience in managing the state’s electricity distribution operations.

In addition, V. Tirupati Reddy, P. Krishna Reddy, V. Mohan Rao and Dr. N. Narasimhulu have been appointed as members of the Board of Directors of TGRPDCL . The government believes the creation of the new company will enable more focused power management for agriculture and help ensure reliable electricity supply for farmers across Telangana .
