Tejasvi Surya’s ‘Partition’ Remark Sparks Row, Telangana MPs Protest
Remarks made by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya in the Lok Sabha have sparked a political controversy. Protesting his comparison of the formation of Telangana with the Partition of India , Congress MPs from the state staged a demonstration outside Parliament on Friday. They demanded an immediate apology from Surya for hurting the self-respect of the people of the region.
During a discussion on delimitation of constituencies in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, the Bengaluru South MP said that the manner in which the Congress party divided undivided Andhra Pradesh was “worse than the Partition of India and Pakistan.” The remarks drew strong reactions from Telangana leaders.
BRS working president K T Rama Rao (KTR) strongly condemned the statement, saying it reflects the BJP’s lack of respect for Telangana’s identity. He termed the comparison of statehood with Partition as “utter foolishness and arrogance.” He alleged that BJP leaders were insulting the sacrifices of martyrs and accused leaders from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tejasvi Surya of displaying an anti-Telangana stance .
BRS leader Dasoju Sravan said that comparing Telangana’s formation carried out constitutionally under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution with Partition amounted to an insult to the Constitution. He demanded strict action against Surya.
While asserting that the BJP-led Union government would handle the 2026 delimitation effectively, Surya criticised the earlier bifurcation process. However, opposition parties argued that belittling Telangana’s formation undermines the self-respect of its people . The protest by Telangana MPs in Delhi led to tense scenes in the Parliament Premises.
