A 14-year-old boy was killed in a leopard attack near the Sharda river in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, with fresh details and wider reports highlighting gaps in response and a growing pattern of attacks in the region.

Sandip Kumar, a resident of Ramnagar Kalan village, was attacked on Monday evening while cutting fodder along the riverbank. Villagers rushed to the spot after hearing his screams and managed to drive the animal away, but he sustained critical injuries and was declared dead at a nearby health centre.

Initial reports indicate confusion within the forest department over jurisdictional responsibility , with officials from different ranges unsure about accountability for the area. Notably, no forest personnel reached the spot immediately after the incident, raising concerns among locals about delayed response .

The attack occurred close to forested zones of the Dudhwa landscape , where frequent movement of big cats into villages has been reported. Officials said compensation would be provided to the family as per norms.

Recent incidents show the killing is part of a wider and escalating trend. In April, a woman was dragged from her home and killed by a leopard in the same district, triggering protests by villagers demanding stronger action.

Earlier, a seven-year-old boy was also killed after being dragged from a wheat field, with forest teams deploying cages, drones, and camera traps to track the animal.

Across India, similar encounters have been reported in recent days, including a child injured in Gujarat and livestock killed in Kerala , reflecting a broader rise in human-leopard conflict.

Experts attribute the surge to shrinking habitats, dense vegetation near villages, and proximity to reserve forests. Authorities have intensified patrols and advised residents to avoid isolated areas, especially during dusk and night.
