Marking a significant shift in its organisational strategy, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has initiated a comprehensive leadership overhaul aimed at strengthening its structure and broadening its social base. In a key development, party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu has elevated Nara Lokesh as National Working President , signalling a greater role for the younger leadership in managing the party’s organisational affairs and shaping its future course.

The decision reflects a calculated effort to modernise the party’s internal framework while preparing it for upcoming political challenges. In a historic move, Dr. Byreddy Shabari has been appointed as the first woman National General Secretary , alongside Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Rajesh Kilaru , underlining the party’s commitment to strengthening women’s representation in leadership roles.

At the state level, senior leader Palla Srinivasa Rao has been reappointed as Andhra Pradesh president, with the party simultaneously constituting a massive 185-member state committee . The new structure has been designed keeping future elections and organisational expansion in focus.

A key highlight of the restructuring is its strong emphasis on social justice , with more than 66% representation given to weaker sections , including Backward Classes , Scheduled Castes , Scheduled Tribes , and minorities , reflecting an inclusive approach to leadership.

Breaking away from convention, the party has also elevated grassroots leaders directly into the Politburo , reinforcing the slogan “Cadre is the Leader” and signalling a shift towards recognising merit and grassroots contribution over hierarchy. The announcement of a 29-member Politburo and a 31-member national committee further strengthens this approach.

Political analysts believe the overhaul is part of a long-term strategy to consolidate the party’s organisational strength and prepare it for future electoral battles, particularly with a clear focus on the 2029 elections .
