Tata Steel plans to invest ₹10,000 crore in its Jharkhand projects by 2028, with the investment expected to generate around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, as the steelmaker expands capacity and adopts lower-emission technologies.

Of the proposed investment, around ₹7,000 crore will be directed towards HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology. The company also plans to invest ₹2,600 crore in expanding its Tinplate Division and another ₹1,500 crore in the Combi Mill, according to company officials.

A key part of the investment plan is the development of a 1-million-tonne pilot plant for HIsarna technology within the existing Jamshedpur ecosystem. Engineering work for the project has already commenced, with the facility expected to utilise existing infrastructure and supply hot metal to the Jamshedpur steel melt shops.

HIsarna, a patented Tata Steel technology, is a low-carbon ironmaking process that can produce iron without conventional coke, sinter or pellet plants. The technology is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 20% compared with the traditional blast furnace route while also lowering capital costs and reducing dependence on imported coking coal.

The investment comes as Tata Steel seeks to increase its steelmaking capacity in India from the current 27.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 40 MTPA through capacity expansion and cleaner production methods. The company has a long-term target of taking its overall capacity to more than 50 MTPA, with most of the planned growth expected in India.

Tata Steel currently operates an 11 MTPA plant at Jamshedpur and a 1 MTPA facility at Gamharia in Jharkhand. The planned investments are expected to strengthen the state's industrial ecosystem while creating new employment opportunities and supporting the company's transition towards more sustainable steel production.
