
Tata Motors - Jaguar Land Rover Open ₹9,000 Crore Plant in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s position as one of India’s leading automobile manufacturing destinations received a major boost with the inauguration of the new Tata Motors–Jaguar Land Rover production facility in the state. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin formally opened the plant at Panapakkam in Ranipet district, describing the occasion as a “ golden day ” in the state’s industrial journey. The project, backed by an investment of around ₹9,000 crore by the Tata Group , moved from foundation stone to production in just 16 months , a pace the Chief Minister said reflects the state’s administrative efficiency and investor-friendly approach.
The mega facility is expected to create 5,000 jobs in the coming years, offering significant opportunities for local youth while strengthening the state’s manufacturing ecosystem . Stalin emphasized that the plant is not merely an industrial unit but a key driver of economic growth , employment, and technological advancement . Marking the inauguration, the Chief Minister rolled out the first Range Rover Evoque from the production line, symbolizing the start of luxury vehicle manufacturing in Tamil Nadu. The facility will produce petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles , aligning with future mobility trends.
Tamil Nadu’s growing reputation as the “Detroit of India” has attracted numerous automobile manufacturers over the years, with the state accounting for nearly 35% of India’s automobile production and a significant share of the country’s auto exports. A strong network of auto component suppliers , established industrial corridors around Chennai, Oragadam, and Sriperumbudur, skilled manpower, and robust port connectivity have made the state a preferred investment destination. Recent developments include discussions between the Tamil Nadu government and Ford Motor Company , reflecting continued global interest in the region.
The Chief Minister noted that the state’s “Dravidian Model” governance focuses on creating a supportive business climate and ensuring swift project implementation. He said Tamil Nadu now competes with global manufacturing hubs and urged companies to expand into research and development and advanced production.
Also present at the event was N. Chandrasekaran , Chairman of Tata Sons , who highlighted the group’s long-standing ties with the state. He said the greenfield facility is designed around renewable energy and sustainable manufacturing , further strengthening Tamil Nadu’s leadership in India’s automobile sector.
