Tata Group to Launch First Shipbuilding Venture in Kerala, CM Unveils Maritime Push

Kerala is set to take a significant leap in India's maritime industry, with the Tata Group planning to establish its first shipbuilding venture in the state. The project, announced by Chief Minister V D Satheesan , is expected to strengthen Kerala's position as a key player in shipbuilding, ship maintenance and port-based infrastructure.

Speaking at the inauguration of Maritime Mahotsavam-2026 , organised by the Kerala Samudra Mission , the chief minister said the proposed venture would include ship maintenance facilities , creating a comprehensive maritime ecosystem in the state.

Satheesan said the government is actively working to transform Kerala into a major maritime hub by attracting investments and expanding infrastructure. Besides shipbuilding, the state is also focusing on developing essential services that support the shipping industry.

As part of these efforts, the government has held discussions with leading public sector oil companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) , HPCL and BPCL , to establish bunkering facilities in Kerala. Such facilities would enable ships to refuel at Kerala's ports, enhancing their appeal for domestic and international maritime traffic.

The chief minister also announced that the state government would extend support to Cochin Port for the development of a cruise terminal , a move aimed at boosting cruise tourism and strengthening Kerala's maritime economy.

The announcements reflect the state's broader strategy to attract large-scale industrial investments while creating employment opportunities and improving port infrastructure. If implemented as planned, the Tata Group's venture could mark a major milestone in Kerala's ambition to emerge as one of India's leading maritime and shipbuilding destinations.
