Tata electronics, Japan’s ROHM join hands to manufacture power semiconductors in India
Japanese semiconductor major ROHM Co., Ltd. and Tata Electronics have entered into a strategic partnership to manufacture semiconductors in India, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to build a domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem and integrate with global supply chains.
The collaboration brings together ROHM’s strength in semiconductor device design and power electronics technology with Tata Electronics’ growing capabilities in assembly, testing and advanced packaging . The companies plan to jointly manufacture power semiconductors in India for use in both local and international markets, while also leveraging their respective sales networks to expand customer reach.
Under the partnership framework, Tata Electronics will handle the assembly and testing of ROHM-designed power semiconductor devices at its Indian facilities. The first product under this arrangement will be an automotive-grade power-saving component , a critical part used in modern vehicles to improve energy efficiency. Shipments to customers are expected to begin next year. Over time, the collaboration is set to extend into advanced packaging technologies , enabling the development of higher-value and more complex semiconductor products.
The partnership reflects India’s evolving position in the global semiconductor industry. While the country has long been a hub for chip design and engineering talent, it has historically lacked large-scale commercial semiconductor manufacturing. At present, India’s domestic production is largely concentrated in assembly, testing and packaging , with full-scale wafer fabrication capacity only now beginning to take shape through new investments.
Several large semiconductor projects are currently under construction, supported by government incentives, but commercial output remains limited compared to established manufacturing hubs such as Taiwan, South Korea and the United States. Against this backdrop, partnerships like that of ROHM and Tata Electronics are seen as crucial for accelerating capability building, technology transfer and supply-chain localisation.
By linking ROHM’s design expertise from Japan with Tata Electronics’ manufacturing infrastructure in India, the alliance creates a more integrated value chain that supports the government’s “Make in India” vision. The focus on designing products abroad while manufacturing and packaging them domestically also helps ensure a more stable supply of critical electronic components for India’s fast-growing automotive, industrial and electronics sectors.
Kazuhide Ino, Member of the Board and Managing Executive Officer at ROHM, said the company aims to expand its portfolio of packaged semiconductor products manufactured in India and contribute to a sustainable, region-based supply chain. He added that the partnership would help meet rising demand from Indian customers seeking locally produced semiconductors, while also supplying jointly manufactured products to global markets.
Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, said the collaboration aligns with the company’s long-term objective of helping establish a robust semiconductor industry in India. He noted that Tata Electronics’ assembly and test facilities would support ROHM in delivering products tailored for both Indian and international customers, while strengthening trust and resilience in global semiconductor supply chains.
Tata Electronics is already investing heavily in India’s semiconductor infrastructure, including the development of a large chip manufacturing facility in Gujarat and a testing and packaging unit in Assam . These projects are expected to serve a wide range of industries, from consumer electronics and automobiles to defence and strategic sectors.
As global demand for semiconductors continues to grow, driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and advanced electronics, the ROHM–Tata Electronics partnership underscores India’s ambition to move beyond design and services and emerge as a meaningful manufacturing base in the global semiconductor landscape.
