Tarique Rahman to Be Sworn In as Bangladesh Prime Minister Today
Tarique Rahman will be sworn in as Bangladesh’s Prime minister today , marking a significant political transition after his Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory in the country’s 13th parliamentary elections . In a break from tradition, the ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad instead of the presidential residence, Bangabhaban . President Mohammed Shahabuddin is scheduled to administer the oath to the new cabinet at 4:00 pm, following the swearing-in of Members of Parliament earlier in the day.
The BNP has secured a commanding majority, winning 209 of 297 seats , while Jamaat-e-Islami captured 68 seats to emerge as the second-largest bloc. Rahman, 60, will assume the office of prime minister for the first time, replacing interim government chief Muhammad Yunus , whose tenure followed a period of political upheaval and administrative uncertainty.
The February 12 election was the first national vote since the 2024 student-led uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule . Her Awami League was barred from contesting, and the polls recorded a turnout of about 59.44 percent amid a fragile security environment. Observers view the vote as a crucial step toward restoring democratic governance after years of political polarization and unrest.
Following the results, Rahman struck a conciliatory tone by meeting rival leaders and calling for national unity . Four minority candidates including two Hindus and two Buddhists were elected on BNP tickets, a development seen as symbolically important in a Muslim-majority nation where minority safety has been a recurring concern.
