At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a fire broke out at a hotel in West Bengal’s Birbhum district early Monday, with investigators examining a suspected electrical fault and alleged fire-safety lapses.

The blaze erupted around 5 am on the ground floor of Bideshini Lodge in Tarapith, a major pilgrimage town, when most guests were asleep. Firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control before rescuing several occupants. The injured were taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, reportedly near the main circuit breaker at the reception area. However, officials have not yet issued a final forensic determination, and the exact cause remains under investigation. The death toll initially stood at seven before another body was recovered from the hotel, taking the toll to eight. Police have arrested hotel owner Kalyan Pal as investigations continue.

Authorities have identified the victims as Rajendra Nath, his wife Asha Nath, their eight-year-old son Ayushnath Modok, Shubraj Modak, 10, Buran Modak, Kamal Roy, Amit Pal and Subir Saha. The victims were reportedly pilgrims from Meghalaya and North Bengal.

The tragedy has raised serious questions about the hotel’s fire-safety arrangements. Investigators reportedly found that an emergency exit was closed, while its keys were not immediately available. The hotel’s fire alarm was also reportedly non-functional, potentially hampering efforts to alert guests and facilitate evacuation.

Officials said the premises had firefighting equipment and two staircases, but heavy smoke reportedly accumulated inside because staircase windows were closed. Authorities are now examining whether the hotel possessed the required licences and complied with fire-safety regulations. As of the latest available reports, no credible evidence has been found of previous fire-safety violations or notices against the hotel. The safety deficiencies identified so far relate to the circumstances surrounding Monday’s blaze and remain part of the investigation.

The hotel has been sealed, while forensic teams examine the site to determine whether the electrical fault alone caused the tragedy or whether preventable safety lapses contributed to the deaths.
