Tanvi Sharma Storms Into Taipei Open Final, Sets Up Title Clash Against Nguyen

Indian badminton’s next generation star Tanvi Sharma continued her impressive rise on the international stage as the 17-year-old stormed into the women’s singles final of the Taipei Open Super 300 after a dominant straight-game victory over Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Hsun on Saturday.

The young shuttler from Punjab produced a composed and attacking performance to defeat the World No. 24 opponent 21-17, 21-11 in just 33 minutes, keeping alive her hopes of securing her first BWF World Tour title.

Tanvi, who had finished runner-up at the US Open Super 300 last year, displayed remarkable control throughout the semifinal. Her powerful cross-court smashes, deceptive pushes and quick finishing ability constantly troubled Huang, who struggled to match the Indian’s pace and precision.

The opening game remained competitive in the early stages, with both players exchanging points. However, Tanvi gradually built a lead and moved ahead from 14-10 to 17-11. Although Huang attempted a late comeback by reducing the gap, the Indian youngster maintained her composure to close out the game.

In the second game, Huang briefly matched Tanvi at 9-9, but the Indian shifted gears with aggressive backcourt strokes and clever net play. She dominated the closing stages by winning 12 of the final 14 points to complete a convincing victory.

Tanvi will now face Vietnam’s sixth seed Thuy Linh Nguyen in Sunday’s final after the Vietnamese player defeated fellow Indian Unnati Hooda 21-15, 21-18 in the other semifinal.

Unnati started strongly against Nguyen and stayed competitive in the opening exchanges, but the Vietnamese shuttler used accurate placements and controlled rallies to take the first game. The Indian bounced back after the interval, opening up a 16-12 lead, but Nguyen staged a late recovery by increasing the intensity and forcing errors to seal the match.

A silver medallist at the Junior World Championships, Tanvi has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent seasons. She was part of India’s gold medal-winning squad at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships and has already claimed titles at the Bonn International and Denmark Challenge.

With confidence, attacking flair and a fearless approach, Tanvi now stands just one victory away from the biggest achievement of her young career.
