Young Indian shuttler Tanvi Patri concluded a promising campaign with a runner up finish at the USD 10,000 Austrian Open International Series in Graz on Sunday, going down to Canada’s Rachel Chan in the women’s singles final.

The rising talent from Odisha lost 14 to 21, 17 to 21 against the top seeded Canadian at the Raiffeisen Sportpark, where Chan controlled the tempo of the match to deny Patri a breakthrough title.

Despite the defeat, Patri’s journey to the final stood out as one of the highlights of the tournament. Training at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, she showed impressive form and maturity throughout the competition, taking down several higher ranked opponents on her way to the summit clash.

Her path to the final included notable victories over eighth seed Ranithma Liyanage , Malaysia’s Oo Shan Zi , second seed Ozge Bayrak of Turkey , and third seed Peng Yu Wei , underlining her growing stature on the international circuit.

In the final, Patri fought hard in both games but struggled to consistently break Chan’s rhythm during key phases, especially in the closing stages of each game.

There was further Indian interest in the tournament as the mixed doubles pair of Sathish Karunakaran and Zenith Abbigail also finished as runners up after a closely contested final. The duo went down 21 to 19, 13 to 21, 20 to 22 to seventh seeded Germans Jan Colin Voelker and Emma Moszczynski in a dramatic three game encounter.

The narrow loss highlighted the pair’s resilience, particularly in the deciding game where they pushed the German combination till the very end before eventually falling short.

While titles narrowly slipped away in both finals, the performances of Patri and the mixed doubles pair added to India’s growing presence in international badminton, especially among emerging players gaining experience at the senior level.
