The Tamil Nadu government has intensified its action against illegal quarrying, temporarily shutting down 67 quarries and initiating proceedings against 88 more after inspections revealed widespread violations of mining regulations.

Natural Resources Minister T K Prabu said authorities detected irregularities at 155 of the 431 quarries inspected across the state during a week-long enforcement drive. Officials also identified 78 locations involved in illegal mineral extraction and seized 469 vehicles allegedly transporting minerals without authorization. Legal action, including fines and criminal proceedings, is being pursued against violators.

The inspections covered districts including Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, and Madurai , following complaints that some operators were extracting minerals beyond limits permitted under environmental and mining clearances. Concerns had also been raised over inadequate monitoring of quarry activities.

Tamil Nadu has more than 2,000 licensed quarries , which supply granite, rough stone, gravel, and other materials essential for construction and infrastructure projects. While the sector contributes significantly to economic activity, environmentalists have long warned that excessive or illegal quarrying can cause groundwater depletion, soil erosion, habitat destruction, and damage to agricultural land .

The latest crackdown has also renewed concerns about the timing of environmental enforcement. Experts note that regulatory action often begins only after significant ecological damage has already occurred, making restoration difficult and expensive. In many instances, the effects of over-extraction on landscapes, water resources, and local ecosystems become visible only after prolonged violations.

The government said inspections will continue across the state and that stricter monitoring measures will be introduced to ensure compliance with mining and environmental regulations. Officials maintain that the objective is to curb illegal extraction while ensuring that licensed quarrying activities operate within approved limits.
