Tamil Nadu signs Rs 5,300 cr MRF deal, launches mega drive for ships and industry
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Wednesday rolled out a sweeping development push across sectors , combining large-scale industrial investments with new policy initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s long-term growth trajectory .
At the heart of the announcements was a Rs 5,300 crore Memorandum of Understanding with MRF to establish a state-of-the-art tyre manufacturing facility at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Sivaganga district. The investment, spread over 12 years, is expected to generate around 1,000 direct jobs while creating significant opportunities for ancillary industries in the region.
Government data in recent years has indicated that nearly 70-80 per cent of industrial MoUs signed in Tamil Nadu have moved beyond paperwork into implementation stages. In that backdrop, the MRF proposal ranks among the larger commitments of the past three years , though it is yet to formally enter the ground-breaking phase.
Equally significant was the launch of the Tamil Nadu Shipbuilding Policy 2026 , which seeks to position the state as a global hub for sustainable ship construction, repair and marine research . Leveraging Tamil Nadu’s long coastline, established ports and industrial ecosystem, the policy aims to attract domestic and international shipbuilders, marine engineering firms and green shipping technology providers. Officials expect substantial private participation, with investments potentially running into several thousand crores over time.
Beyond industry, the Chief Minister inaugurated 229 completed projects worth Rs 2,732.77 crore and laid foundation stones for 19 new schemes valued at Rs 655.36 crore , including key drinking water initiatives and the launch of “Punal 1916”, an integrated grievance redressal centre.
In the education sector, new infrastructure was unveiled at Presidency College , while environmental initiatives included an Eco Park in Guindy and a Super Tree Tower at the Kalaignar Centenary Park. Investments were also announced for police infrastructure, housing for personnel, sports facilities including an Olympic-standard swimming pool , and welfare hostels for working women.
Taken together, the announcements signal a calibrated strategy combining industry, maritime ambition, infrastructure expansion and social development, as Tamil Nadu positions itself for its next phase of economic growth.
