Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha Bypoll: TVK Set for First Upper House Entry
The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the Rajya Sabha bypoll in Tamil Nadu , where one seat has fallen vacant , setting the stage for a key political test for the ruling TVK.
The vacancy arose after AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House on May 7, 2026, following his election to the Mailam Assembly constituency. Tamil Nadu currently has 18 Rajya Sabha seats in total , and this bypoll will fill the single vacant seat .
The nomination process will begin on June 1 and continue till June 8 , with scrutiny scheduled for June 9 . Candidates can withdraw nominations until June 11 , while polling will be held on June 18 from 9 am to 4 pm . Counting of votes will begin the same day at 5 pm .
Politically, the ruling TVK , led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay , is expected to secure the seat comfortably, given its position as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly . This would likely mark TVK’s first entry into the Rajya Sabha , strengthening its presence in the national legislature.
However, uncertainty remains over whether TVK will retain the seat for itself or allocate it to an alliance partner, particularly the Indian National Congress , which had extended early support to the party during government formation when it lacked a majority.
The outcome is being closely watched as it could signal the evolving dynamics within the ruling alliance and TVK’s approach to power-sharing at the Centre.
