Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday reviewed the state's preparedness for heavy rainfall associated with the active northeast monsoon, assessing district-level conditions, emergency response arrangements and ongoing relief operations.

Vijay visited the State Emergency Operation Centre at Ezhilagam in Chennai, where he examined monsoon preparedness and coordination among government departments as heavy rain affected several parts of the state.

Overnight downpours inundated parts of Chennai and several southern districts, while water levels in reservoirs rose and waterfalls experienced increased flows. Sankarankoil was among the areas reporting significant waterlogging following intense rainfall.

During the review, the chief minister assessed weather monitoring facilities and the administration's response to the evolving situation. He also inspected the Integrated Multi-Hazard Monitoring Dashboard, which brings together rainfall observations and forecasts, reservoir water levels, weather radar imagery, satellite images, cloud movements and wind conditions.

The monitoring system provides information used by officials to assess weather developments and coordinate responses across districts. Vijay also reviewed the centre's call-centre facilities for tracking public complaints and communication arrangements supporting emergency operations.

The review covered districts facing heavy rainfall warnings, including the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Madurai, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam, among others.

The continuing northeast monsoon has brought heavy rainfall to multiple regions, increasing water levels in reservoirs across the state. The situation has required district administrations and relevant departments to monitor local conditions and coordinate responses to rain-related incidents.

Separately, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed to party leaders and workers to assist families affected by the rainfall. In a message posted on social media on Thursday, he urged them to work with local authorities and give particular attention to elderly people and other vulnerable residents.

The Congress is part of the Tamil Nadu government led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The state government's review focused on monsoon preparedness, emergency coordination and relief measures as rainfall continued across affected districts.
