Tamil Nadu Mandates Fee Disclosure in Private Schools, Warns of Strict Action

In a move aimed at increasing transparency in school fee collection , the Tamil Nadu government has directed all private schools in the state to prominently display the government-approved tuition fees on their notice boards.

The School Education Department issued the directive ahead of the reopening of schools on June 4 , following complaints that several private institutions were collecting fees far beyond the prescribed limits. Officials warned that any school found charging fees in excess of the approved amount could face cancellation of its recognition .

According to the department, more than 13,000 recognised private schools are currently functioning across Tamil Nadu. Schools have also been instructed to refrain from collecting any hidden admission charges or other unauthorised fees from parents.

A senior official said the regulation is backed by the Tamil Nadu Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Amendment Act , under which a committee comprising government officials and education experts determines the standard fee structure for private schools.

Parents who suspect violations have been encouraged to lodge complaints with the concerned authorities, enabling stricter monitoring and enforcement of the rules.

The latest measure reflects the state's effort to ensure accountability in private education and protect parents from arbitrary fee hikes. Fee transparency rules aim to address growing concerns over the commercialization of private schooling , where rising educational costs and opaque fee structures have increasingly become a source of financial strain for families. By mandating public disclosure of approved fees , the government hopes to curb irregularities and strengthen trust in the education system.
