Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has spoken to the family of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered in Coimbatore’s Sulur area, assuring them of justice and government support, the victim’s grandmother said on Sunday.

According to her, the Chief Minister enquired about the family’s well-being , including their living conditions, and assured them of all necessary assistance. “He spoke to us and assured justice … He told us not to worry,” she said.

The brutal crime has triggered widespread shock and anger across Tamil Nadu, with political parties and civil society demanding swift and stringent action. Following mounting opposition criticism, the Chief Minister on Saturday reiterated that the government would ensure strict punishment for those responsible.

Police have arrested two men , including an acquaintance of the victim, in connection with the case. Officials said investigation is continuing, with forensic examination and interrogation underway to establish the sequence of events and possible involvement of others. Charges related to sexual assault and murder , along with provisions under the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita , are expected to be invoked.

The incident has reignited concerns over child safety in the state, with calls for stronger surveillance, faster trial mechanisms in crimes against minors, and improved community-level protection systems.

The state government has also assured financial and welfare support to the victim’s family as part of immediate relief measures, while the broader debate over crimes against minors and preventive safeguards continues to intensify.
