S wedish automaker Volvo Group has reinforced its long-term commitment to India by describing the country as its “home market,” following over 25 years of sustained operations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Volvo Group India and Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles under the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) framework, aimed at advancing sustainable and decarbonized heavy-duty transportation in India.

It was emphasized by Kamal Bali, President and Managing Director of Volvo Group India, that the company no longer feels like an outsider in the Indian market. According to him, India has evolved from being a promising destination into one of Volvo’s most significant global markets. “India has now become like our home market,” he stated, adding that the company’s fourth international manufacturing hub is being established in India, a move that underscores the nation’s strategic role in Volvo’s global operations.

The MoU with Tata Motors has been designed to promote collaboration between major industry players to build a sustainable heavy-duty transport ecosystem. As part of their shared membership in LeadIT, both companies have pledged to accelerate the decarbonisation of the trucking industry while continuing to compete commercially. The agreement has been viewed as a critical step toward aligning industrial growth with environmental responsibility.

It was further highlighted by Bali that the partnership will address key ecosystem components such as infrastructure development, regulatory alignment, and talent enhancement. The initiative has been intended to strengthen India’s transition toward a cleaner transport framework while supporting economic expansion. “The MoU is about working together to accelerate decarbonisation of the heavy-duty trucking industry,” Bali stated, noting that cooperation among manufacturers, fuel suppliers, infrastructure providers, and policymakers will be essential to achieving net-zero emission targets.

According to industry data shared during the announcement, heavy-duty transport contributes nearly 37 percent of total road emissions in India. Therefore, achieving sustainability in this sector has been recognized as a national priority. It was underlined that systemic collaboration, rather than isolated innovation, will drive the success of this transition.

Commenting on the collaboration, Sara Modig, State Secretary of Sweden, remarked that the partnership between Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles and Volvo Group demonstrates how the industry can lead the way in creating fossil-free heavy transport solutions. It was noted by her that the effort represents a model for building scalable technologies, supportive policies, and robust infrastructure needed for sustainable logistics across markets.

Over the past two decades, Volvo Group’s footprint in India has been considerably expanded. Its operations now include trucks, buses, construction equipment, power solutions for marine and industrial applications, financing, and services. The company’s largest R&D and IT hub outside Sweden has been established in India, further showcasing its technological and digital commitment to the region.

Through its joint venture with Eicher Motors, Volvo has been positioned as a leader in medium-duty engine production, setting global benchmarks in innovation, safety, and environmental stewardship. The joint venture structure has enabled Volvo to balance its premium brand positioning with Eicher’s mainstream market presence, allowing deep insights into the Indian market dynamics.

With its ongoing investments, research-driven approach, and collaborative sustainability efforts, Volvo Group’s strategy in India has been reshaped to focus not merely on business expansion but on long-term environmental and technological leadership. The latest partnership with Tata Motors has been viewed as a major milestone in India’s clean mobility transformation journey.
