Swamy again warns of impending Epstein Files fallout on Indian polity

A series of provocative tweets by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has stirred political circles, after he claimed that the upcoming opening of all Epstein files could feature images allegedly involving some Indian ministers and MPs. Swamy, citing information from his network, warned that such material and similar content that may never surface publicly could have been used by foreign agencies in the past to exert pressure on Indian political figures. He suggested that the disclosure of the files may indicate how private vulnerabilities have been exploited internationally.

While his remarks triggered conversation online, political observers note that India has historically shown restraint in treating the private lives of public figures. Unlike in the West, where personal indiscretions routinely escalate into major public controversies, Indian society has generally drawn a distinction between private conduct and public responsibility, particularly when no illegality or coercion is involved.

In India, there are no notable examples of private lives being made grounds for moral panic or political weaponisation. Some also argue that sensationalising consensual relationships only strengthens the ability of foreign intelligence agencies to exploit private information for geopolitical leverage.

As Swamy’s comments circulate, the emphasis from several quarters remains on national interest. The expectation is that the Indian public, as in the past, will respond with maturity and avoid turning private individual conduct into destabilising political spectacle thereby limiting opportunities for external manipulation.
