Surat Court Orders Case Against Anurag Kashyap Over Social Media Remarks On Brahmin Community
A court in Surat has ordered the registration of a criminal case against filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap over alleged objectionable social media remarks concerning the Brahmin community.
The order was passed by the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) A S Jani, which partly allowed a private complaint filed by advocate and Vishva Hindu Parishad leader Kamlesh Raval. The court observed that there was sufficient ground to proceed with registration of a case, noting that the material placed before it indicated the posts could have the effect of defaming a community and potentially disturbing public order.
The court directed police to register a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including Section 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), Section 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and Section 353(2) (circulation of false information).
According to the complaint, Kashyap had made remarks on social media platform X in response to objections raised over the trailer of the film Phule , which had triggered opposition from members of the All India Brahmin Samaj. The complainant alleged that Kashyap’s posts and subsequent replies were derogatory and amounted to insulting the entire Brahmin community.
It was further stated that the controversy began after the All India Brahmin Samaj objected to the trailer release of Phule on April 16 last year, following which Kashyap allegedly posted content that was seen as denigrating the community. His responses to posts opposing his remarks were also cited as part of the grievance.
The complainant argued that Kashyap’s influence as a public figure in the film industry meant his statements had a wider impact on audiences across age groups and could potentially affect social harmony.
The plea also referred to earlier social media activity, alleging that Kashyap had made an objectionable post in 2020 targeting Hindus and criticising the Union government as “casteist” with a “criminal mentality”.
The complainant further stated that despite issuance of several summons, Kashyap did not respond, after which a non-bailable warrant was reportedly issued, according to submissions placed before the court.
No official statement from Anurag Kashyap was included in the court order or complaint records cited in the matter. The case will now proceed following formal registration by police authorities as directed by the court.
