The Supreme Court of India has announced that it will deliver orders on October 9 regarding the pollution of Rajasthan’s Jojari River. The bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta made the statement on Tuesday.

In legal context,Suo motu refers to a situation where a court takes up a case on its own initiative , without anyone filing a petition or complaint.

Case Taken Up Suo Motu On September 16, the apex court registered a suo motu case over the unchecked industrial waste being discharged into the Jojari River. The court noted that textiles and other industries have been releasing untreated effluents into the river, severely affecting hundreds of villages. It observed that the contaminated water has become unfit not only for human consumption but also for livestock.

Expressing concern, the bench said the pollutants were disturbing the ecological balance of the region. Reports submitted to the court confirmed that the industrial effluents were causing serious damage to both the environment and human health.

The Supreme Court directed both the Centre and the Rajasthan government to take immediate action to ensure industries comply with environmental regulations and prevent further harm. The governments were asked to respond without delay.
