Supreme Court Cancels Sonam Raghuvanshi's Bail in Raja Raghuvanshi Honeymoon Murder Case

The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in 2025. The apex court directed Sonam to surrender before the police within three weeks, marking a major development in the high profile honeymoon murder case.

A Bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale allowed the Meghalaya government's appeal against the earlier bail order. The court observed that allowing Sonam to remain out on bail at this stage could hamper the ongoing trial, overturning the relief that had been granted on procedural grounds related to the communication of her arrest details.

The Supreme Court, however, protected Sonam's right to seek bail again if the trial is delayed. It said that if the trial does not proceed and conclude within six months, she would be free to file a fresh bail application.

The case stems from the death of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who had travelled to Meghalaya with Sonam for their honeymoon. The couple went missing in the Sohra area on May 23, 2025, and Raja's body was recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, 2025, triggering a nationwide investigation.

According to the Meghalaya Police, Sonam allegedly conspired with hired assailants to murder her husband for financial gain. Investigators have filed a chargesheet running over 700 pages, describing the killing as a premeditated conspiracy.

The Supreme Court's latest order has been welcomed by Raja Raghuvanshi's family, who said they have regained faith in the judicial process and hope the trial reaches its conclusion without further delays.
