Sun Pharmaceutical plans two-phase Rs 500 crore manufacturing plant in Assam

India’s largest pharmaceutical company, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd , will invest more than Rs 500 crore to establish a drug manufacturing facility in Assam, a move expected to generate direct employment for over 500 people , Chief Secretary Ravi Kota said on Wednesday.

Senior executives of the company met the Chief Secretary to discuss various aspects of implementing the project, including infrastructure requirements and timelines. The company was represented by Senior Vice President Rahul Awasthi and Associate Vice President Ranjit Mohapatra .

In a post on X, Kota said the proposal involves setting up drug formulation manufacturing units in the state to serve the domestic market and will be implemented in two phases .

“The proposal entails an investment of over Rs 500 crore, which will be rolled out in a phased manner,” he said.

The project is expected to create more than 500 direct jobs after the commencement of operations.

Key issues such as land availability, water and power supply, connectivity, and access to skilled manpower were discussed during the meeting.

Sun Pharma also underlined its commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices , including efficient water use, greater adoption of renewable energy and responsible waste management, in line with environmental and regulatory standards.

The meeting was part of the Assam government’s ongoing outreach to prospective investors aimed at boosting employment generation, inclusive development and long-term economic growth in the state, Kota added.

Sun Pharmaceutical is the world’s fourth-largest and India’s largest pharmaceutical company, with more than 40 manufacturing facilities across five continents and operations in over 100 countries .
