Noida golfer Sukhman Singh kicked off the festive season in style by winning the prestigious Amateur Golf Championship of India at the Tollygunge Club on Sunday.

Singh produced a commanding performance to defeat Haryana’s Harman Sachdeva in the 36-hole final. He built an unassailable 7UP lead after 29 holes, prompting the tournament director to declare him the champion. The event, organised by the Indian Golf Union (IGU), is recognized as the world’s longest-running amateur matchplay championship.

The final saw Singh in fine form from the start. He remained all square with Sachdeva until the sixth hole but surged ahead to 4UP by the 12th and maintained a 2UP lead after the first 18 holes. Although Sachdeva reduced the gap to three by the 23rd hole, Singh’s consistent attacking play and precise putting saw him extend his lead to 6UP by the 25th hole, eventually sealing victory with a 7UP advantage.

“My win still feels like a dream. I have worked my whole life for this moment, and it’s incredible to finally achieve it. My father has been my biggest support, pushing me forward even when I doubted myself,” Singh said.

Golfing talent runs in the family. Singh’s father, Simarjeet Singh, was a former India No.1 amateur and three-time Sri Lankan Amateur champion, as well as an IGU Mid-Amateur winner.

2025 has been a remarkable season for Sukhman. He previously won the IGU Rajasthan Amateur, finished runner-up at the Andhra Pradesh Amateur, and secured fourth place at the South African Amateur strokeplay event. His latest triumph adds another significant milestone to an already impressive year.
