Indian Railways recorded a robust operational performance in July 2026, posting 9 per cent growth in freight loading over the corresponding month last year, reflecting sustained industrial demand, stronger logistics and rising economic activity across the country.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the national transporter handled 141.3 million tonnes of freight during July, up from 129.7 million tonnes in July 2025. The increase was driven by higher movement of key commodities that support infrastructure, agriculture and power generation.

Among the fastest-growing segments, iron ore loading jumped 22.2 per cent, while fertilizers rose 12 per cent. Loading of coal and food grains increased 11.5 per cent each, while the category of other goods registered 12.1 per cent growth.

To meet rising energy demand, domestic coal supply to thermal power plants increased 20 per cent compared with the same month last year, underscoring the Railways' role in ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability for electricity generation.

The higher freight movement also translated into stronger earnings. Freight revenue increased by ₹1,137 crore, representing an 8 per cent year-on-year rise. Among railway zones, East Central Railway and Eastern Railway recorded the highest freight revenue growth at 33 per cent each, followed by West Central Railway at 23 per cent and South Eastern Railway at 10.33 per cent.

Passenger traffic also continued its upward trajectory. Indian Railways carried 63.35 crore passengers during July 2026, compared with 62.19 crore in the corresponding period last year, indicating growing reliance on rail travel across both suburban and long-distance routes.

The ministry attributed the overall performance to improved operational efficiency, stronger freight logistics, expanding infrastructure and customer-focused initiatives. It said the sustained growth in freight, revenue and passenger movement highlights the Railways' expanding contribution to India's economic growth, energy security and nationwide connectivity, while reinforcing its position as the backbone of the country's transport network.
