Stray dog involved in elderly woman’s death killed by residents in Kerala

A devastating stray dog attack in Vellarakad that left an 84‑year‑old woman dead and her son badly injured has once again alarmed authorities about the wider street dog menace across India. Residents killed the animal in the early hours of Friday after it allegedly mauled bedridden Karthiyani , prompting local outrage and renewed calls for systematic action.

India records millions of dog‑bite cases every year , with stray animals accounting for the vast majority of incidents. Government‑linked data shows roughly 37 lakh (3.7 million) dog bites were reported in 2024 nationwide , making it one of the highest incidences in the world. Beyond injuries, India bears a disproportionate share of the global rabies burden, WHO estimates suggest the country accounts for about 36 % of all rabies deaths worldwide . Estimates of human fatalities linked to rabies range from official figures of several dozen annually to global health estimates of up to 18,000‑20,000 deaths a year from rabies transmitted by dog bites.

The Supreme Court of India has taken note of the escalating crisis in recent years. In 2025, a two‑judge bench directed municipal authorities in the Delhi‑NCR region to capture stray dogs and relocate them into shelters as a public safety measure after a surge in bite cases and rabies concerns. That order was later refined by a larger bench, which emphasised a balanced, humane approach , mandating that only rabid or aggressive dogs be housed permanently in shelters , while others should be sterilised, vaccinated, and released back . Municipal bodies must also designate specific feeding zones , prohibit indiscriminate street feeding, and establish helplines for reporting violations .

Experts stress that effective implementation of these guidelines, including sustained Animal Birth Control (ABC) and vaccination programmes, is crucial to prevent further tragedies like the one in Kerala. Municipal agencies are also being urged to educate citizens about responsible feeding and collaboration to protect both public safety and animal welfare.
