Stray Dog Deaths in Telangana Reach 1,200

The series of brutal killings of stray dogs in Telangana continues unabated, triggering widespread outrage across the state. The latest incident, reported from Thimmayipally village in Nagarkurnool district , involved the alleged killing of around 100 stray dogs , sending shockwaves statewide. Animal welfare groups claim that nearly 1,200 stray dogs have been killed across Telangana since December 2025 .

Police have registered an FIR in connection with the incident. Officials of the Charakonda Police Station said cases have been booked against three persons, including the son of the village sarpanch . The action was taken based on a complaint filed by M. Preethi, an animal welfare activist from the Stray Animal Foundation of India .

According to the complaint, about ten days ago, individuals were hired for ₹18,000 to kill stray dogs in Thimmayipally village. The dogs were allegedly administered poisonous injections and later buried about two kilometres away from the village . Activists have alleged the involvement of the village sarpanch and the gram panchayat secretary in the gruesome act.

Police said that only 12 dog carcasses have been exhumed so far , while a detailed investigation is ongoing to trace the remaining bodies. Cases have been registered against the sarpanch’s son, the gram panchayat secretary, and another villager under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita .

Similar incidents of mass killing of stray dogs were reported in several districts of Telangana during December and January . Animal lovers suspect that these acts may have been carried out to fulfil promises made to villagers ahead of gram panchayat elections to address the stray dog menace.

Meanwhile, allegations have also surfaced in Boppapur village of Siddipet district , where around 50 stray dogs were illegally captured and relocated to a forest area . Animal welfare groups have termed the act illegal and demanded strict action against the village sarpanch and secretary .

There is growing demand from various quarters for the government to respond firmly and take stringent action against those responsible for the repeated instances of cruelty towards stray dogs.
