Stray Dog Attacks Nearly 40 People in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna
Panic gripped parts of Satna after a stray dog allegedly bit around 40 people in a series of attacks across the Gahra Nala and Hospital Chowk areas, officials said.
According to hospital authorities, all the injured were rushed to the district hospital, where they received immediate first aid. Doctors confirmed that each victim is being administered anti-rabies vaccinations as a precautionary measure.
Dr Sharad Dubey, a senior physician at the hospital, said the attacks occurred within a short span, with the dog targeting multiple individuals consecutively. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as people attempted to escape the animal.
One of the victims, Sunderlal Saket, recounted that he was near a tea stall at Hospital Chowk when the dog suddenly attacked him. “I somehow managed to escape and save my life. After me, the dog attacked several others in front of me,” he said.
Medical experts highlighted that such incidents pose a serious health risk due to the possibility of transmission of Rabies, a potentially fatal infection if not treated in time. Prompt vaccination and medical attention are crucial in preventing complications.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing issue of stray dog populations in urban areas. Factors such as open garbage, lack of widespread sterilisation drives, and limited municipal resources have contributed to the rise in such cases, officials noted.
Authorities also pointed out that similar incidents have been reported in other parts of Madhya Pradesh in recent months, raising concerns about public safety and the need for effective animal control measures.
Experts emphasise that long-term solutions lie in a combination of mass sterilisation programmes, anti-rabies vaccination drives for dogs, improved waste management, and greater public awareness.
The episode underscores the delicate balance between ensuring public safety and addressing animal welfare concerns, a challenge that continues to confront civic authorities across the country.
