Steyn warns! NZ could inherit ‘chokers’ tag if they falter against India

South African pace legend Dale Steyn has stirred up cricketing chatter ahead of the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad, suggesting that New Zealand could inherit the infamous “chokers” tag if they fail to beat hosts India on Sunday.

New Zealand secured a spot in the summit clash for only the second time in T20 World Cup history, defeating favourites South Africa in a thrilling first semifinal at Eden Gardens, Kolkata . India, on the other hand, edged out England by seven runs in a high-scoring semifinal at Mumbai.

Speaking on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel , Steyn reflected on New Zealand’s record in ICC finals. “Let’s be honest here. Everyone likes to call South Africa chokers, but New Zealand have been in more finals than we have , and yet haven’t won many World Cups themselves. So no offence, New Zealand, but please go on to win this. Otherwise, I am formally handing over that card to you; it’s yours,” Steyn said.

The 42-year-old pacer, who boasts over 400 Test wickets , called India the clear favourites , adding that it would take a “monumental choke” for the hosts to lose. “I really want New Zealand to win, but do I think they’ll beat India? No,” he admitted.

New Zealand have reached eight ICC finals since their ICC KnockOut Trophy triumph in 2000 but have claimed victory only once—in the 2021 World Test Championship final against India. Steyn’s candid remarks underscore the immense challenge the Kiwis face as they take on a formidable Indian side in front of a home crowd.
