Meghalaya , Tripura and Manipur on Wednesday observed their Statehood Day , marking 54 years since they attained full statehood under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1972 , even as the occasion highlighted both development gains and persistent challenges across the three northeastern states .

President Droupadi Murmu extended greetings to the people of the three states, praising their rich cultural legacy , vibrant traditions and extraordinary natural beauty . In a message posted on X , she said the enterprising and talented people of the region have made significant contributions to the nation’s progress and wished them peace and prosperity .

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) also conveyed greetings on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , underlining the Centre’s commitment to inclusive development , improved connectivity and long-term peace in the northeastern region .

Meghalaya , known for its ecological richness , continues to face challenges such as unemployment , environmental concerns arising from unregulated mining , and demands for greater safeguards over land and resources . The state government , supported by the Centre , has stepped up efforts to regulate mining , promote eco-tourism , strengthen agriculture-based livelihoods and improve road and digital connectivity under various central schemes .

Tripura has witnessed relative political stability in recent years, but issues related to unemployment , infrastructure gaps and border management with Bangladesh persist. Government initiatives have focused on expanding rail and road networks , encouraging industrial investment , improving power supply and enhancing skill development programmes to create employment opportunities for youth .

Manipur remains the most troubled of the three states and is currently under President’s Rule since February last year amid prolonged ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meitei and hill-based Kuki-Zo communities . The violence, which began in May 2023 , has claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands . The Centre has deployed additional security forces , initiated dialogue with stakeholders , and prioritised relief , rehabilitation and reconciliation efforts to restore normalcy .

As the three states commemorate Statehood Day , the celebrations serve as both a reminder of their unique identities and a reflection of the need for sustained political engagement , development-focused governance and peace-building measures to address long-standing issues and realise the region’s full potential .
