State to Get 200 New Power Substations, Says Minister Ravi Kumar

The Andhra Pradesh government is undertaking large-scale power infrastructure development to meet the state’s growing electricity demand. Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar announced that the government is investing nearly ₹6,000 crore to construct 200 new power substations in high-load areas across the state. He revealed this during a discussion in the State Assembly on Thursday.

According to the minister, electricity consumption in several parts of the state has been rising rapidly over the past few years. Demand from the industrial sector , commercial establishments, households, and agriculture has been increasing every year. To ensure uninterrupted power supply and prevent disruptions, the government has initiated proactive measures to strengthen the power distribution network .

The minister stated that areas with high power load have been identified and plans have been prepared to construct new substations in those locations. The main objective of these projects is to strengthen the power distribution system, reduce transmission losses , and ensure a reliable electricity supply to consumers.

As part of the initiative, the government is sanctioning 33/11 kV substations wherever required across the state. These facilities will play a crucial role in improving local power distribution and managing increasing electricity demand.

The minister explained that the projects are designed not only to address current requirements but also to meet future electricity needs, considering the state’s industrial growth and development.

He also informed that two 220 kV substations are being constructed in Vizianagaram district at an estimated cost of ₹46 crore. These substations are expected to stabilize power supply in the region and support future demand.

Based on data from the Andhra Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation ( APTRANSCO ), the state currently has 18 substations of 400 kV capacity, 113 of 220 kV, and 244 of 132 kV, totaling around 372 Extra High Tension (EHT) substations. In addition, there are hundreds of 33/11 kV substations supplying electricity directly to villages and towns.

Overall, the state is estimated to have over 900 substations across various voltage levels. With the addition of 200 new substations, the government aims to further strengthen and modernize the power distribution infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.

Minister Ravi Kumar said these projects will play a key role in improving the state’s power supply system and supporting future economic growth.
