British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged his party to “fight together” ahead of a critical vote in the House of Commons that will decide whether he should face a parliamentary ethics investigation over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States.

Members of Parliament are expected to vote on Tuesday on whether the Commons’ Privileges Committee should investigate claims that Starmer misled lawmakers when he said “full due process” had been followed before Mandelson’s appointment last year.

The issue centres on Mandelson’s past association with convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein , which critics argue should have raised serious concerns during the vetting process.

The controversy has intensified following testimony before Parliament suggesting that standard procedures may not have been fully followed. Former senior Foreign Office official Philip Barton told lawmakers he was not consulted about the appointment and indicated that Mandelson’s security clearance process appeared to begin only after the role had been publicly announced.

Starmer’s former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, who resigned earlier this year accepting responsibility for advising on the appointment, is also expected to give evidence before Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee .

The opposition Conservative Party, led by Kemi Badenoch, has pushed for the inquiry, arguing the prime minister repeatedly misled Parliament about the vetting process.

However, 10 Downing Street dismissed the move as a political stunt ahead of local elections scheduled across the UK on May 7.

Although the ruling Labour Party holds a majority in the Commons, the vote is being closely watched as a test of Starmer’s authority. The debate is expected to begin around 11:30 am UK time, with the vote likely in the evening.

The committee has powers to investigate breaches of parliamentary rules, including whether ministers misled lawmakers, a finding that previously forced former prime minister Boris Johnson to step down as Conservative leader in 2023.
